I have a vast collection of books for my son. We’ve been amassing his little library since before he was born and I’m glad I have because he is never at a loss for books. I love to be able to read to him and show him things about the world that we may not get to see in person. My recent addition to this collection is these books from Studio Fun International. They teamed up with the ASPCA and published a children’s book series ASPCA kids: Rescue Readers. These books are fun to read to my little guy because it teaches him about shelter pets and the importance of proper care for animals; something I have been teaching him practically since he was born.
Each story in the series is inspired by a real-life story from the pet’s point of view and includes photographs and facts of the actual pet that inspired the story. The stories are written at a Level 2 reading level for early readers, so it is a bit advanced for my guy, but he loves to hear me read the stories to him and I try to include comparisons to our cat as well. The books also include a letter to the parent that explains the connection of the story to real-life inspiration and the ASPCA’S mission as it relates to children, so you can learn how to further help them understand what is being read to them.
What I like most of all is that it teaches him about rescue pets, something I haven’t really been able to talk to him about. I’m a huge advocate for adopting shelter animals as opposed to buying a pet and I would like for my son to learn that it is more important to adopt and save an animal at the shelter than to buy a designer pet. These books are the starting point of that conversation.
My son loves animals and these books are perfect for him to learn more about them and ways to properly care for them, and I in turn, use real life, hand-on experiences to try to further care for animals through our pet cat as far as proper petting, feeding, etc.
